The University of Texas Medical
Branch is one of 15 campuses of the
University of Texas System.
UTMB is dedicated to educating health science professionals and
researchers, caring for patients, and solving biomedical puzzles
through scientific inquiry. Established in 1891 as the University of
Texas Medical Department, UTMB has grown from one building, 23
students and 13 faculty members to a modern health science center
with more than 70 major buildings, more than 2,800 students and more
than 1,600 faculty. The 100-acre campus includes four schools, two
institutes for advanced study, a major medical library, a network of
hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and
specialized medical care, an affiliated Shriners Burns Hospital, and
numerous research facilities.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to
request to have their transcripts sent ELECTRONICALLY to UTMB
whenever possible. This greatly expedites processing and improves
the accuracy of transcript evaluation. The accepted standard for
this process in Texas goes by the name: SPEEDE. |

Admissions |
| |
The admission committee of each
department seeks students with diverse interests, social origins,
personalities, and other qualities to reinforce the special
character of each academic program. While academic achievement is an
important factor, qualities of intellectual curiosity, creativity,
capacity for friendship, loyalty, leadership, independence,
responsibility and flexibility are considered. An applicant must
have a minimum scholastic grade point average as determined by the
professional program. Grades are not the only determinant of
successful applicants. Reading, writing and interview skills are
also weighed heavily. An applicant must submit complete, official
transcripts from all previous colleges attended. Only official
transcripts are accepted as proof of completed prerequisites.
Students are encouraged to work hard, become involved with volunteer
or work activities in health care, and be well-informed about the
issues in the health professions. For more information on
guidelines, financial aid, campus housing, city information or foreign transcript
procedures, visit the following websites:

Financial Resources |
| |
Financial aid is available to
students at UTMB. The first step is to complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is submitted for the year the
student is applying to the SHP. The Office of Student Financial Aid
is responsible for administration of aid programs, collection of
loan repayments, and financial counseling of students in the areas
of budgeting and money management. Federal regulations require that
any federally funded assistance be contingent upon a careful
analysis of the student's financial need. The next step is to
complete the UTMB student financial aid form. The student will need
to plan a budget for each year of professional schooling. This
budget should include tuition and fees, books and supplies, housing,
utilities, food, entertainment, personal expenses, and
transportation. The Office of Student Financial Aid will evaluate a
student's financial need and identify available resources. The types
of financial aid offered at UTMB are the Federal Direct Student
Loan, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal
Work-Study Program, Pell Grant and State Student Incentive Grant.
Students who are ineligible for financial aid on the basis of
demonstrated need may be eligible for a federally insured Direct
Loan. A limited amount of work-study funds are available. To apply
for financial aid, students should return the financial aid
questionnaire which is included in your acceptance packet. Please
refer to the office of Student Financial Aid website for more
information

About the School |

Allied health forms
the spokes of the dynamic wheel of health care, one of the nation's
fastest growing industries. The term "allied health" was coined to
group diversified professionals who perform essential work in health
care and, at the same time, to distinguish them from those in
medicine, nursing and dentistry. Allied health consists of a variety
of professions, including physical therapy, clinical laboratory
science (medical technology), occupational therapy, physician
assistant studies and respiratory care.
Each allied health profession consists
of workers with different types and levels of skill and knowledge.
For example, the field of medical technology includes medical
technologists, certified laboratory assistants, medical technicians
and lab assistants.
Advantages ranging from consistent
employment and professional development to personal fulfillment and
career advancement explain why the allied health professions
epitomize the term "career opportunity". These advantages are the
reasons you should consider becoming part of the allied health care
team.
It is never too early to begin
planning a career. If you want to clarify your career interests or
identify your aptitudes for a health career, the faculty and staff
at The University of Texas School of Health Professions at Galveston
can help you investigate the nature of the work and the educational
preparation necessary to enter the allied health professions. We
hope you will join us.
The University of Texas School of
Health Professions is located on the campus of The University of
Texas Medical Branch. The campus also consists of a School of
Nursing, a Medical School, a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
and two institutes, houses seven hospitals and is located in close
proximity to several other hospitals and health care facilities. The
City of Galveston is composed of a population that is culturally and
economically diverse. The uniqueness of the physical and social
environment of the school provides opportunities for valuable
educational experiences for both students and faculty. |
