About the School
Allied health forms the spokes of the dynamic wheel of health care, one of the nation's fastest growing industries. The term "allied health" was coined to group diversified professionals who perform essential work in health care and, at the same time, to distinguish them from those in medicine, nursing and dentistry. Allied health consists of a variety of professions, including physical therapy,
clinical laboratory science (medical technology), occupational therapy,
physician assistant studies and respiratory care.
Each allied health profession consists of workers with different types and levels of skill and knowledge. For example, the field of medical technology includes medical technologists, certified laboratory assistants, medical technicians and lab assistants.
Advantages ranging from consistent employment and professional development to personal fulfillment and career advancement explain why the allied health professions epitomize the term "career opportunity". These advantages are the reasons you should consider becoming part of the allied health care team.
It is never too early to begin planning a career. If you want to clarify your career interests or identify your aptitudes for a health career, the faculty and staff at The University of Texas School of Health Professions at Galveston can help you investigate the nature of the work and the educational preparation necessary to enter the allied health professions. We hope you will join us.
