Application Process

To apply to the SBB program:

  1. Complete the UTMB application form. The Application must be completed online by the July 15th deadline. In special situations, the application deadline may be extended until the program slots are filled.
  2. Submit a copy of all undergraduate and graduate college transcripts and MT/MLS or SBB training (if applicable). College transcripts submitted for initial review do NOT have to be an official copy; a photocopy is acceptable.
    • International students must submit results of an extended equivalency report from an approved ASCP agency (http://www.ascp.org/Board-of-Certification). UTMB accepts Foreign Credentials Services of America and World Education Services, Inc. You must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent (if an international student).
  3. Submit 3 professional references (individuals who can attest to your abilities in blood banking; at least one must be from a supervisor or medical director) using the admission reference form. References may write additional information on the back or attach a letter if they desire. References must be sent to the address (email or regular mail) listed below.
  4. Prepare a narrative answering the following questions:
    • How did you develop an interest in Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine?
    • Why do you want to be a Specialist in Blood Bank Technology?
    • Why did you apply to the UTMB SBB program?
    • What would you like to be doing in 5 years?
    • Why do you think you are qualified to do the distance education program? Outline any previous distance education courses you have completed.
    • For TRM-MS applicants only: How will the TRM-MS degree benefit your career goals?
  5. Applicants must also submit the following:
  6. Applicants will be notified by September 1 if they meet the initial qualification.
  7. A telephone conference call will be conducted after notification to address questions about the expectations for the SBB year. Applicants who wish to continue with the application process will then apply through UTMB Enrollment Services.
  8. Class will start in the Summer semester (around the first week of May). Orientation (1 week) will be held during April. Students must be present in Galveston for all 5 days of this orientation.

To apply to the TRM-MS Program:

  1. Complete the UTMB application form. The Application must be completed online by the deadline for the semester in which you plan to start the program (see below). In special situations, the application deadline may be extended until the program slots are filled.
    1. Fall semester deadline:  July 15
    2. Spring semester deadline:  November 15
    3. Summer semester deadline:  March 15
  2. Submit a copy of all undergraduate and graduate college transcripts, MT/MLS and SBB training. College transcripts submitted for initial review do NOT have to be an official copy; a photocopy is acceptable.

      2. Why did you apply to the UTMB SBB program?
      3. Detail your SBB training program:  Location, year completed, area that you most enjoyed, challenges you faced in the program.
      4. Describe your experience with a distance education program. Outline any previous distance education courses you have completed.
      5. How will the TRM-MS degree benefit your career goals?
  5. Applicants must also submit a current CV or resume listing all previous experience and education, including any publications, presentations or awards
  6. Applicants will be notified of results of initial review within 2 weeks.  Applicants who meet the criteria for acceptance and wish to continue with the application process will then apply through UTMB Enrollment Services.  
    1. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the colleges/universities to Enrollment Services.
  7. Applicant must complete the GRE (www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register) and have scores sent to UTMB (Code 6887).
  8. Class for the Fall semester start the last week of August, classes for the Spring semester start the first week of January and classes for the Summer semester start the first week of May

For an application to be evaluated you must have…

  1. Completed UTMB application form with email address
  2. College transcripts
