Scholarship Application and Deadline

The 2009-2010 School of Health Professions scholarship application process is now open.

There is one standard form for each department for these scholarships.  By submitting the student profile sheet, you will be considered for all awards for which you are eligible.
By accurately filling out this form, you will be considered for a variety of school and university-administered scholarships.

Scholarships are awarded one time each year - in the FALL- to qualified, newly admitted and continuing baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral students. During the months of April and May, all eligible students can expect to receive an e-mail notification outlining the application process and providing deadline dates. Once awards have been determined, applicants will be notified of their status by July 1.

A complete application consists of the online portion and two (2-3) faculty letters of recommendation.  All materials, including the letters of recommendation, must be received no later than the May 1 deadline.  Late and incomplete applications will not be considered.

Using data gathered from the scholarship application, each respective scholarship committee member reviews qualified applicants based on financial need, academic merit, and other criteria relevant to the particular endowment. The Committee makes their decision in the spring, after the Admissions Office has made its offers of admission.

Student Profile Sheets
Student Profile Sheets (SPS) are often used to assess students' eligibility for awards.  The SPS contains student most up-to-date contact information along with student demographics.  All students are encouraged to keep their student profile sheets up-to-date following each semester.  Information related to awards and honors and other accomplishments should be documented on the SPS.  Please contact your Scholarships and Awards Chair within your Department to make sure you have access to completing your SPS.  Many SPS can be be updated online.

Maintaining Eligibility/Renewal
The criteria for maintaining eligibility and/or renewing an award differ by endowment. In many cases, a student must maintain a certain grade-point-average in order to continue receiving funds from the endowment. In other instances, there are many scholarships that are one-time awards and thus are not available for renewal.

Departmental Scholarships
While the entering freshman and continuing scholarship student profile sheet are intended to be comprehensive for the UTMB School of Health Professions scholarships, some academic departments still administer independent departmental scholarships that require separate applications.

Criteria
Criteria for scholarship selection varies from department to department, and from year to year. It is important to note that while academics are considered in scholarship awarding, it is only one of many criteria used in the selection of scholarship recipients. Other common criteria include financial need, work history, and honors and distinctions. There is no overall minimum in any category that applies uniformly to all academic departments. You should contact your college or department to request any available applications, and to obtain all necessary information regarding requirements and deadlines.

Scholarships are awarded based on need, merit, or a combination of the two. Scholarships do not need to be repaid, but may have specific criteria for you to remain eligible (i.e. grade point average, major, etc.). Some awards are merit-based, others are need-based, and some are available only to students who've chosen a particular area of study or who meet particular biographical criteria. The university awards a multitude of scholarships to students each year (this past year, the School of Health Professions alone gave out just over 200 scholarships totaling $189,000).

Scholarships may also be obtained from outside entities such as corporations, foundations, and/or organizations. Please click below for specific scholarship opportunities.

Merit Based Scholarships
The School of Health Professions awards a variety of merit and achievement awards each year to new student applicants only.  Decisions about recipients are at the sole discretion of the SHP Scholarship Committee and Departments.  Applicants are notified of their scholarships when admitted to the School.

Department Scholarships
A large percentage of scholarships available to students in the School of Health Professions are distributed through the departments in which the majors are housed.  Please use the following links or contact departmental advising offices for more information.

Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Occupational Therapy
Physical Therapy
Physician Assistant Studies
Respiratory Care

Restricted/Endowed Scholarships
UTMB and the School of Health Professions has a number of restricted/endowed scholarships that are awarded to eligible students, according to donors' standards.

Private Scholarships
Private Scholarships are awarded from various organizations, private agencies, foundations, community-based organizations, and civic groups to help worthy students meet the cost of attending college.  Information regarding these sources can be obtained online, from local high school guidance offices and libraries.
