Clinical Correlation

Course Description:The student will be given the opportunity to demonstrate: 1) evaluation of patient histories and laboratory test results using graduate-level case studies; 2) recognize and correlate patterns of test results with specific disease processes; 3)prioritize confirmatory testing procedures and corresponding results; and 4) assess potential legal and ethical problems presented in case. (45 conference, discussion, or seminar hours per enrollment period) Prerequisite: Graduate Status
Cognitive & Psychomotor Objectives:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the concept, issues and process of Evidence-Based Medicine as applied to clinical correlations.
  2. Identify the parts of a well-built clinical question using the PICO format.
  3. Identify and explain at least three basic criteria for judging the validity of studies based on: diagnosis, therapy, prognosis, etiology, and meta-analysis.
  4. Given patient exam and history findings, determine laboratory tests that will assess the pathology presented based on the synthesis of literature review.
  5. Interpret the results of laboratory tests and determine the need for further testing to assess pathology.
  6. Explain the purpose, results and interpretation of specific laboratory testing for a specific pathology to healthcare professionals and to patients.
  7. Create a research protocol in which laboratory testing and interpretation are integrated. (Doctoral Students Only)
Affective Objectives:Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate the development of behaviors and attitudes consistent with those of the profession. Evaluation of these behaviors will be performed using the Affective Objectives and Evaluation checklist in the Orientation Handbook."

The student should successfully meet these objectives a minimum of 80% of the time for satisfactory completion of this course. Certain criteria on the checklist are more specific. Students must meet those criteria at the level indicated on the checklist. To show the appropriate professional behaviors you will:

  • demonstrate a positive attitude by being prepared for lecture and laboratory sessions, completing assigned tasks, and show evidence of initiative. (ATTITUDE)

  • follow directions, pursue accuracy diligently, and work on your own after being given instructions. (DEPENDABILITY)
  • use advance planning, establish priorities, utilize extra time efficiently and keep work area neat and clean. (ORGANIZATION)
  • attend to detail by documenting data accurately and legibly, meeting deadlines and following all standard operating procedures. (ATTENTION TO DETAIL)
  • recognize errors and repeat lab tests when necessary. (ERROR RECOGNITION AND CORRECTION)
  • cooperate and communicate effectively with classmates and instructors and display courteous, considerate behavior towards classmates and instructors. (INTERPERSONAL SKILLS)
  • display self-confidence by initiating new procedures, by interacting freely in discussion, and with instructors and peers and by accepting constructive criticism. (SELF CONFIDENCE)
  • explain the purpose of each step in instrument operation, perceive most procedural errors and instrument failure appropriately and arrive at appropriate solutions using sound logic and analytical reasoning. (PROBLEM-SOLVING)
  • abide by all rules and regulations governing clinical laboratory students. (POLICY COMPLIANCE)

The above behaviors will be evaluated and reflected in your grade. Professional behavior and respect will be considered a part of your participation grade in the course. You will have the opportunity to develop these attributes in classroom assignments and activities. You will be placed in different work groups or assigned different partners for exercises. You will also be given opportunities to demonstrate your ability to work independently, follow instructions and be creative.

Behavior during examinations, written and practical, will be monitored. Inappropriate behavior may result in pursuance of disciplinary action.
