Clinical Laboratory Science Seminar

Course Description:The student will be given the opportunity to develop a broader understanding of the clinical laboratory scientist's role as a health professional in a variety of learning experiences, including seminars, lectures and panel discussions. Included in this course are review and practice examinations as well as a comprehensive battery of examinations encompassing four knowledge areas. The student's performance in the seminar, as well as on the battery of examinations, will be evaluated on a Pass/Fail basis. Each knowledge area on the comprehensive battery of examinations must be passed with a grade of “C” or above to be classified as passing on a Pass/Fail basis.
Assignments:Six 50-item practice quizzes will be administered during the 8-week period of this course. Each quiz will be comprised of two subject areas, such as Microbiology and Chemistry. These quizzes will be for assisting the students in studying for the comprehensives and subsequently the certifying examinations. The student should make notations as to the subject matter of the questions missed on these quizzes. At the subsequent meeting of the class, the students as a group will be responsible for discussing the questions missed on the previous quiz in terms of why distractors are incorrect, etc. The other major component of the course is the two offerings of the comprehensive examinations.
Grading:As addressed in the attached Comprehensive Examination Policy, students must achieve a 72% on each of the four parts of the Comprehensive Examination to “Pass.” The policy describes the requirements for eligibility for a re-examination. In addition, the student must obtain a minimum of a 72% average on the six quizzes offered during the course. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
Comprehensive Exam Policy:GRADING AND PASSING SCORES
The score attained on the comprehensive examination will be recorded as "Pass or Fail" and will constitute the major portion of the grade for Seminar in Clinical Laboratory Science.

The examination will be norm referenced. A passing score of seventy-two percent (72%) will be required for each of the four- (4) major sections of the examination and for the total examination. Seventy-two percent (72%) of any given section will be a correct response on thirty-five (35) of the fifty (50) questions in that section. Seventy-two percent (72%) of the total examination will be a correct response on one hundred forty-four (144) of the total two hundred (200) questions.

A score of less than seventy-two percent (72%) on one or more major sections of the first offering of the comprehensive examination will require the student take the second offering of that comprehensive examination section(s).

Upon obtaining results of the first offering of the comprehensive examination which indicate the student will have to re-take one or more sections of the comprehensive, the student will submit within five (5) class days his/her plan for preparation for the second offering of the examination. The plan will be submitted to the primary course instructor in writing with specific details of the student's plans for preparation for the second and final offering of the examination.

A score of less than seventy-two percent (72%) on one or more of the four (4) major sections of the second offering of the comprehensive examination or a score of less than seventy-two percent (72%) on the total comprehensive examination will be a failing score. A grade of "F" will be recorded for Seminar in Medical Technology. The department's gradings and promotion committee will either recommend to the Departmental Chairman and the SAHS Gradings and Promotion Committee that the student be dismissed from the program, consistent with the SAHS in the current UTMB General Catalog, or be permitted to repeat the Case Studies in Clinical Laboratory Science. A remediation plan must be submitted.

If the student is dismissed from the program and wishes to repeat Seminar in Clinical Laboratory Science, the student will have to formally apply for acceptance to the program. This formal application will be competitively judged against all other current applications to the program and admittance is not guaranteed. Re-enrollment for purposes of successfully completing the Comprehensive Examination will only be permitted for one time. If a student is not successful in completing the Comprehensive Examination during the first re-enrollment in Seminar in Clinical Laboratory Science, another opportunity will not be granted.

Required Course Materials::It is recommended that those students who have not already purchased The Board of Registry Study Guide for Clinical Laboratory Certification Examinations to aid in preparation for their certifying examinations, do so as soon as possible. Three copies of the Board of Registry’s “Knowledge and Ability” guidelines for MT’s have been placed in the LRC. These guidelines provide information on specific knowledge that MT’s/CLS’s are expected to have for the certification examination. Other study guides are available and might also prove useful in preparation for the quizzes and comprehensive exams associated with this course. Academic Progress:Information regarding the Student's academic progress in this course will be shared with their Academic Advisor and/or Department Chair. Student's making unsatisfactory progress will be referred to the Office of Student Affairs for assistance.
Academic Integrity:Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, and any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such an act. Procedures to be followed in the event of alleged academic dishonesty are described in the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System, and the SAHS Student Handbook. Alleged academic dishonesty issues should be reported to the Student Affairs Officer.
Professional Behavior:As a part of a professional program, you are expected to conduct yourselves in a manner consistent with the level of trust and responsibility that will be placed on you when you are part of a health care team. You are expected to be honest in your dealings with your instructor and your peers. You are also expected to be able to follow instructions, to act with the utmost integrity, to follow safety protocols while in laboratory, to perform laboratory work with care, and to act in accordance with those standards characteristic of those we call "professionals."
Behavior during examinations, written and practical, will be monitored. Inappropriate behavior may result in pursuance of disciplinary action.

Course Evaluation:Students will be given the opportunity to evaluate the instructor and course near the end of the course/semester. When submitting course evaluations students must follow the guidelines provided by the course instructor or the department.
