Basic Methods and Introduction to Lab Operations

Course Description:The student will have the opportunity to: 1) describe correctly techniques and procedures for collecting patient samples; 2) perform successful multiple tube blood collections by venipuncture; 3) implement appropriate techniques for handling and storage of various types of samples; 4) explain and comply with general laboratory safety practices; 5) describe and appropriately perform basic microscopy, pipetting, and calibration techniques; 6) discuss the role of the clinical laboratory scientist within the divisions of the clinical laboratory; and 7) observe the inter-relationship of clinical laboratory scientists within divisions of the clinical laboratory and health care.
Affective Objectives:

Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate the development of behaviors and attitudes consistent with those of the profession. Evaluation of
these behaviors will be performed using the Affective Objectives and Evaluation checklist in the Orientation Handbook.


The student should successfully meet these objectives a minimum of 70% of the time for satisfactory completion of this course. Certain criteria on the checklist are more specific. Students must meet those criteria at the level indicated on the checklist. To show the appropriate professional behaviors you will:

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude by being prepared for lecture and 2 Rev. 8.09.11 laboratory sessions, completing assigned tasks, and show evidence of initiative. (ATTITUDE)
  • Have only excused absences arrive on time and begin work promptly. (ATTENDANCE/PUNCTUALITY)
  • Follow directions, pursue accuracy diligently, and work on your own after being given instructions. (DEPENDABILITY)
  • Use advance planning, establish priorities, utilize extra time efficiently and keep work area neat and clean. (ORGANIZATION)
  • Attend to detail by documenting data accurately and legibly, meeting deadlines and following all standard operating procedures. (ATTENTION TO DETAIL)
  • Recognize errors and repeat lab tests when necessary. (ERROR RECOGNITION AND CORRECTION)
  • Cooperate and communicate effectively with classmates and instructors and display courteous, considerate behavior towards classmates and instructors. (INTERPERSONAL SKILLS)
  • Display self-confidence by initiating new procedures, by interacting freely in discussion, and with instructors and peers and by accepting constructive criticism. (SELF CONFIDENCE)
  • explain the purpose of each step in or instrument operation, perceive most procedural errors and instrument failure appropriately and arrive at appropriate solutions using sound logic and analytical reasoning.(PROBLEM-SOLVING)
  • Abide by all rules and regulations governing medical technology students. (POLICY COMPLIANCE)

The above behaviors will be evaluated and reflected in the grade. Professional behavior and respect will be considered a part of your clinical observation/ participation grade in the course. You will have the opportunity to develop these attributes in classroom assignments and activities. You will be placed in different work groups or assigned different partners for exercises. You will also be given opportunities to demonstrate your ability to work independently, follow instructions and be creative.

** Minimum requirements include the successful collection of 10 venipunctures. Five of which must be multiple tube collections (i.e. 1 red top and 1 EDTA tube) and 10 finger sticks. Please see Phlebotomy and Finger sticks in your Course Documents folder for further instruction/requirements.

***Includes Assigned Clinical Lab Observations: you must complete a minimum of 70% of your assigned clinical observations to be eligible for Clinical Lab Observation grade points

Course Policies:Participation: Students will be expected to attend class, take notes, and participate in class projects. Assignments will not be accepted after the due date. Makeup exams and labs will be given only on selected Fridays with documentation of an illness or acceptable excuse as defined in the CLS Attendance and Participation policy in the Orientation Handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor, via email, that a make-up exam or lab is necessary. Not all labs are available for make-up.

Academic Progress:Information regarding the Student's academic progress in this course will be shared with their Academic Advisor and/or Department Chair. Student's making unsatisfactory progress will be referred to the Office of Student Affairs for assistance.
Academic Integrity:Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, and any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such an act. Alleged academic dishonesty issues should be reported to the Student Affairs Officer.

You are expected to be honest in your dealings with your instructor and your peers. You are also expected to be able to follow instructions, to act with the utmost integrity, to follow safety protocols while in laboratory, to perform laboratory work with care, and to act in accordance with those standards characteristic of those we call "professionals."
Behavior during examinations, written and practical, will be monitored. Inappropriate behavior may result in pursuance of disciplinary action.

Course Evaluation:Students will be given the opportunity to evaluate the instructor and course near the end of the course/semester. When submitting course evaluations students must follow the guidelines provided by the course instructor or the department.
