Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA)

The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) is a campus student organization whose mission is to promote occupational therapy through involvement with the community at the university, local, and state levels. This mission is pursued through the following goals:

  1. Campus and community public education activities, such as health fairs;
  2. Community service activities such as therapeutic horsemanship and volunteer programs;
  3. Cooperative activities with the Texas Occupational Therapy Association and Pi Theta Epsilon, the national honor society for occupational therapy;
  4. Fundraising activities to support the objectives and activities of the club; and
  5. Social and educational activities to enhance the learning and professionalization of the occupational therapy students of the UTMB program.

Any student enrolled in the professional occupational therapy program may join the Student Occupational Therapy Association by paying the annual dues, as established by the membership. Although SOTA takes part in many community activities and sponsors recreational activities, the organization has traditionally been involved in many ongoing activities. These activities include:

  • Being a big sister/brother for new occupational therapy students
  • Lunching and giving support to prospective students during admission interviews
  • Planning and supporting the Senior Banquet held shortly before Level II Fieldwork
  • Delivering Meals on Wheels to local residents.
