Heather C. Ashford, MPAS, PA-C

PAS Faculty and Staff Bio

Heather C. Ashford, MPAS, PA-C is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at the UTMB School of Health Professions. She is a native of Syracuse, New York, and earned her Bachelor of Sciences degree from St. Lawrence University with a combined major in biology and physics. She was awarded her Physician Assistant Certification from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York in 1999. Her first two years in clinical practice were in General and Thoracic Surgery before pursuing a career in Orthopedic Surgery. Since 2002, she has worked in Orthopedic Surgery both in New York and Texas. In 2010, she earned her MPAS from the University of Nebraska with an emphasis in Orthopedic Surgery.

Mrs. Ashford served in the United States Army Reserve as an Aeromedical Physician Assistant for nine years, including an overseas tour of duty for Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2009, she transferred to the United States Navy Reserve where she continues to serve as a Physician Assistant with an Orthopedic Specialty.

Mrs. Ashford joined the faculty at UTMB in June 2013. Since then, her educational awards include the SHP Star Award for Professionalism, the 2014 School of Health Professions Award for Educational Excellence, and the 2015 Department of Physician Assistant Studies' Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. Her special areas of interest include interprofessional education and healthcare simulation.

Mrs. Ashford is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), Texas Academy of Physician Assistants (TAPA), Physician Assistants in Orthopedic Surgery (PAOS), Physician Assistant Educators Association (PAEA), Association of Schools of Allied Health Professionals (ASAHP), the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), and The Society of US Army Flight Surgeons (SoUSAFS).

Her husband, Brad, is an Engineer at National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and together they are the adoring parents of two children.
