New Student Information

We are very pleased you decided to attend the UTMB Physician Assistant Program. Please review the information below as several action items will need to be addressed before enrolling.

It is important that you check information on SHP matriculation and orientation on the Newly Admitted Students website. This page serves as a resource to incoming students and contains a checklist with important information on requirements such as immunizations, background checks, transcripts, mandatory health insurance, etc. that must be completed prior to matriculation and enrollment. Certain items such as background checks can only be done no earlier than 60 days before matriculation so be attentive to timeframes and deadlines.

Incoming Student Checklist

  • Email Account
    From this point forward, the program will send all communications to you through your UTMB email account. Check your email frequently for important info.
  • Orientation
    Date: June 29-30, 2017 prior to the beginning of classes on July 5.

    Dress for orientation is business casual. Parking will be in the free UTMB shuttle lot located at 4th Street and Winnie. A schedule will be sent to you in the next several weeks.

  • White Coat Orders
    Order Deadline: Mon, May 15, 2017

    White coats should be ordered through the University Bookstore. Visit their website for info. If you have questions about the white coats, contact the University Bookstore at 409-772-1939.

  • White Coat Rehearsal
    Date: Fri, June 30, 2017 at 9:00 am.

    It is a part of the orientation activities. You do not need to bring your white coat to rehearsal, however, do not forget to bring your coat to the ceremony that evening.

  • White Coat Ceremony
    Date: Fri, June 30, 2017 at 6:00 pm in the Levin Hall main auditorium.

    The program holds a white coat ceremony for you. This tradition highlights the rite of passage of entering students into the PA curriculum, profession, and patient care. Please invite your family and friends to attend and share this important celebration. We will provide you with ordering info for your white coat in the near future.

  • Registration
    While you are enrolled at UTMB, the program will handle registration for you. Tuition and fees must be paid by midnight the day before classes begin.
  • Textbooks
    The list of textbooks for courses is located on the UTMB Bookstore website. The link for books is http://bookstore.utmb.edu/. Summer textbooks should be posted sometime in late May.
  • Medical Terminology Textbook
    The PA faculty believes that students' progress better during the first semester if they have a fair understanding of medical terminology. Consequently, the program requests students purchase the self-study medical terminology book prior to registration. The name of the book is Medical Terminology Systems (w/TermPlus 3.0) by Barbara A. Gylys, ISBN #9780803635753, retail price $87.74 (tax included). If you wish to purchase the book through UTMB, please contact the University Bookstore (409) 772-1939. You will be tested over the material as early as the first week of classes. Failure to make an 80 or above may result in disciplinary action.
  • BLS Certification
    Certification is required upon enrollment in the program and must be maintained throughout matriculation. Please make a copy of your current certification and send to Angie Donnella, UTMB PA Program, 301 University Boulevard, Galveston, Texas 77555-1145 by June 15. BLS must be recertified at the time of ACLS certification next December/January regardless of the BLS expiration date. It is your responsibility to keep your card for proof of certification. Course must be AHA approved.
  • Student Information
    If your address, telephone numbers, email, or any other information has changed, please send your updated information for our records to Shirley McGraw at smcgraw@utmb.edu.
  • Transcripts
    We encourage you to check your account in MyStar. It will indicate what documents are pending. Your final transcript for any courses or degrees that were in progress when you applied/submitted to CASPA must be sent to Enrollment Services. Transcripts should be sent electronically from your university to Enrollment Services/UTMB
  • Academic Calendar
    The PA program's calendar is slightly different from the SHP academic calendar posted online. Many of our courses are closely synchronized with the School of Medicine. Before making any plans for time off, please check with the department to make sure these dates are open.
    • June 29-30, 2017 - New Student Activities and Orientation
    • June 30, 2017 - White Coat Ceremony, Levin Hall, 6 p.m.
    • July 5, 2017 - Classes Begin - Summer Semester
    • August 25, 2017 - Last day of classes - Summer Semester
    • August 28, 2017 - Classes Begin - Fall Semester
  • Computers
    The PA Program requires students to have laptop computers for participation and completion of class activities. The minimum system requirements recommended for Windows or Macintosh-based laptops are available through UTMB Information Services. A Windows-based laptop is recommended, but not required. The recommended requirements can be found by visiting the UTMB IS Help Desk website. You might consider upgrading existing laptops to meet the minimum recommended specifications. Microsoft Office software is used at UTMB, and is available to current students at a generous discount from the UTMB Bookstore
  • Parking
    You may obtain student parking after you receive your UTMB Student ID badge. New students will be taking badge photographs on Thursday, and plans are to distribute badges the following week. A map and information on student parking as well as the shuttle schedule can be viewed on the parking website.
