2017 Causeway FunD Run
Early Bird Deadline:
The 2016 UTMB Health School of Health Professions' (SHP) Causeway FunD Run/Walk was a great success. Under cloudy skies, over 650 runners and walkers had the unique experience of heading north on the southbound outside lanes of the bridge. Participants had a rare opportunity, at the turnaround point at the summit of the causeway, to have a grand view of Galveston Island, the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. As Dr. Elizabeth Protas, Senior Vice President and Dean of SHP put it "Many of us were compelled to stop and take a photo op when we got to the top. It did not help our chip times, but it sure was a special Texas experience." The event featured a 1K for kids, a 5K wheelchair race and certified 5K for runners and walkers.
This year's run is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, 2017. The Causeway FunD Run/Walk is the premiere fundraiser of student scholarships for the school. The UTMB SHP is dedicated to educating health professions students to meet the health care needs of a growing state by preparing competent professionals to assume direct roles in the provision of health services. The School of Health Professions enrolls over 830 students in multiple health fields. These Respiratory Therapists, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Nutritionists, Physician Assistants, and Occupational and Physical Therapists will help to solve medical care distribution, access and cost problems. "Scholarships are competitive awards that help us recruit and recognize our best students and ensure that financial concerns are no impediment to students' educational ambitions. They are an incentive for achievement, inspiring each of our students to strive for the highest standards of academic success." says Dean Protas.
While the School of Health Professions Causeway FunD Run is an event to help raise much-needed scholarship funds for students, it has also become an event full of celebration and spirit.
"It has been said "Education is all a matter of building bridges." ~ Ralph Ellison
"For us, the Causeway bridges excellence in education with excellence in healthcare", said Dr. Elizabeth Protas.
One of only two events that allow running and walking enthusiasts to negotiate the causeway, the SHP FunD Run awards the top runners of each age division, recognizes outstanding teams at the end of the race with special awards and is family friendly.
In partnership with fitTRIrun / FTR Race Management - a local multi-sport performance gear store and race management timing company - this fifth annual event will start with a children's 1K at 7:45 a.m. followed by a 5K wheelchair race at 8:05 a.m. The 5K run begins at 8:15 a.m. with the 5K walk immediately following the runners.
The 5K course is USA Track and Field certified and starts in the parking lot of the Galveston County Daily News Building, 8522 Teichman Road, Galveston. Participants will proceed up the southbound lanes of the causeway, turn around at the acme of the bridge, and head back to the starting line.
Take advantage of the early registration rates and register before midnight on February 10th. Early registration fees are $10 for kids, $35 for adults and $20 for currently enrolled UTMB students. Teams are highly encouraged.
Create a team of at least six members and receive a discount of the registration fees. By creating teams, we hope to multiply our efforts by raising funds to support SHP student scholarships.
By donating, sponsoring or participating in the FunD Run, supporters have the opportunity to help students pursue their educational goals and allow the SHP to continue to provide awards to outstanding students and tuition assistance to those in need.
