Admissions

We use the DICAS to match students to our program. No new application will be accepted for Fall 2016. We will review new applications in Spring 2017 for the class entering the program Fall 2017.

To sit for the Registration Examination for Dietitians, those seeking the credential must complete accredited didactic coursework and an accredited internship. At UTMB, we provide only the internship (1240 hour supervised practice experience), and the applicant must submit a verification statement indicating the she or he has successfully completed a didactic program in dietetics before the first day of class in the first fall semester. To become licensed in the State of Texas, the individual must complete the Texas Jurisprudence exam before submitting an application and must show evidence of a Bachelor's or graduate degree in nutrition or related field and passing exam score on the examination administered by Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). This internship therefore provides a route for successful graduates of the program to become registered and licensed in the State of Texas. Further information concerning licensure can be accessed at http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/dietitian/dt_apply.shtm.

To successfully apply to the UTMB MS/DI, you are asked to complete the following:

  • Maintain a minimum overall undergraduate Grade Point Average of 3.0/4.0
  • Complete the GRE (code for UTMB is 6887)
  • Submit a complete DICAS application by February 15th of each year at https://portal.dicas.org/ and complete computer matching form at http://www.dnddigital.com/ If you are unfamiliar with the computer matching process, further instruction may be found at the following web link: https://www.dnddigital.com/ada/questions.php
  • Obtain an official Verification Statement from an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) program and official transcript(s) or a completed Declaration of Intent to complete degree.
  • The Nutrition and Metabolism Admissions Committee reviews applications and chooses applicants to complete a Skype interview. In the past, applicants have lost the opportunity to interview due to email from the program director sent to 'junk' in the applicant's university email system. We advise applicants to regularly check their junk email folders during the month of March.

After matching to the program, prospective students will be required to do the following steps to matriculate:

  • Send an email to the Program Director to accept the match
  • Complete application to the UTMB School of Health Professions, Nutrition and Metabolism MS program (after matching to UTMB)
  • Submit verification statement from ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)*
  • Provide proof of current health insurance and car insurance
  • Provide evidence of immunizations required by UTMB student health
  • Successfully complete the UTMB employment screening and security background check
  • Review and complete items included in the SHP newly admitted student checklist and the UTMB general new student checklist

* Students must provide proof of a bachelor's degree from an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited program. Prospective students may have earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in an unrelated field but completed post-baccalaureate didactic coursework in dietetics from an accredited college or university.
