Dr. Brian Walsh Named New Chair of the Department of Respiratory Therapy

We are excited to share that Brian K. Walsh, PhD, RRT, RRT-NPS, RRT-ACCS, RPFT, FAARC, has been appointed as the Chair of the Department of Respiratory Therapy, effective February 1, 2025.

Dr. Walsh brings with him an impressive 29 years of experience in respiratory therapy and has been a significant asset to UTMB since 2022. During his time here, he has held various positions, including Professor (Tenured), Interim Chair, and Director of the Degree Advancement MSRT Program. His leadership and commitment to the advancement of our profession have been exemplary.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences from Old Dominion University, an MBA from Liberty University, and a PhD in Health Sciences (Respiratory Therapy) from Rush University. Dr. Walsh began his career in emergency medical services and respiratory therapy, where he cultivated a strong interest in research and education. His early research focused on identifying gaps in evidence within respiratory therapy practices, which led to significant findings and the development of nationally recognized clinical practice guidelines that continue to influence the field. Dr. Walsh’s work has been cited over 4,200 times, and he holds a i10-index of 58.

Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. Walsh served as a clinical director at major children’s hospitals in Colorado and Texas, founded the Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy Program in Virginia, and held esteemed positions such as President of the American Association for Respiratory Care, Assistant Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, and Research Coordinator at Boston Children’s Hospital.
