Nutrition, Metabolism & Rehabilitation Sciences

The Department of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Rehabilitation Sciences promotes education and research training programs in rehabilitation sciences, nutrition, and physical activity with a focus on recovery associated with disabilities and chronic disease that limit physical independence. We directly support two education programs – Master of Science and Dietetic Internship (MS/DI) and Master of Science in Health Professions (MSHP) – and maintain a close connection with the Rehabilitation Sciences PhD program that was recently moved to the new School of Public and Population Health. The Department also supports a new Certificate in Pain Management.

About Our Department

Effective September 2021, the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences and the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism merged to become the Department of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Rehabilitation Sciences (NMRS) in the School of Health Professions to continue the mission in education and research. The interdisciplinary Division of Rehabilitation Sciences was established in 2001 to develop and support an infrastructure for research and graduate education programs in rehabilitation sciences. The Department of Nutrition and Metabolism was established in 2011 to support a combined Master of Science and Dietetic Internship and research in muscle physiology, protein metabolism, physical activity interventions, and clinical nutrition.

The new NMRS department continues to provide an environment of interdisciplinary research, education and scholarship that is recognized internationally for scientific quality and significance. NMRS supports education and research training programs in rehabilitation sciences, nutrition, and physical activity with a focus on recovery associated with disabilities and chronic disease that limit physical independence. Faculty in the department have been awarded a number of federal grants supporting research in all of these areas. NMRS faculty have established strong collaborations with other universities and institutions across the nation that contribute to the education and research mission.
