Respiratory Therapy

Academics & Accreditation

Our Vision

To enhance the quality of healthcare through the efforts of our graduates' clinical, scholarly, and research activities. We envision our graduates assuming leadership roles in clinical practice, education and research.

Entry-Level MSRT Program Goals

To prepare leaders for the field of respiratory therapy by including curricular content with objectives related to the acquisition of skills in one or more of the following: management, education, research, and advanced clinical practice (which may include an area of clinical specialization).

Upon completion of the program, the graduate will be a competent entry-level respiratory therapist. Competency will be assessed in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains. The outcome measures to address competency will be the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential, employer satisfaction, and graduate satisfaction.

Entry-Level MSRT Program Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the United States. To achieve this end, it utilizes an ‘outcomes based’ process. Programmatic outcomes are performance indicators that reflect the extent to which the educational goals of the program are achieved and by which program effectiveness is documented.

CoARC's mission is to ensure that high quality educational programs prepare competent respiratory therapists for practice, education, research, and service. Program accreditation by CoARC is necessary in order to be eligible for the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) professional credentialing examinations. At this time, only Alaska does not require licensure/credentialing to practice.

The UTMB Respiratory Therapy program #200413, Master of Science in Respiratory Therapy (MSRT) in Galveston, Texas is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (www.coarc.com) through November 30, 2026.
